This is the list of books I am planning to read this year. As with the previous lists, I'll add books to it whenever I manage to get my hands on something new, and I'll strike a book once I finish it.

As always, I check my to-read list for the year and take a careful look at all the books I've read during the year.

I've finished reading Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

As always when it comes to Gaiman, it was a brilliant read, but what drew to me the most is that the story felt like something Diana Wynne Jones (who was a friend and inspiration for Gaiman) could have written. I got vibes from Time of the Ghost especially. Gaiman says the Hempstocks have made an appearance in some form or another in previous books like Stardust or The Graveyard Book (I'll need to reread those to spot them, which I'm sure won't be hard), but I feel they have probably been peeking in the pages of DWJ's books too. That, and like her, Gaiman has used pieces of his own childhood.

Overall, a book I highly recommend.

This week's book recommendation at Unshelved ([syndicated profile] unshelved_feed) is Anne of Green Gables. Go check it out.

I'm still reading Reflections: On the Magic of Writing, a compilation of essays and public speeches Diana Wynne Jones has written throughout her career. In the book there's also an interview by Charlie Butler, which I'm currently halfway through, and this particular bit has just made me laugh: Cut. )

Okay, so far I'm enjoying The Casual Vacancy. If you're expecting something like Harry Potter, however, you'll be highly disappointed, as it's completely unlike it in every aspect. It's better if you approach this book without any sort of expectations. I still have a long way to go before I finish it, though, so for the time being I'm abstaining from doing a more complete review or even a "you MUST buy this!!!!" sort of recommendation.

I'm reading a Fifth Doctor novel (Goth Opera by Paul Cornell), and I couldn't help but giggle when Fivey at some point jumped through a window shouting "Geronimo!"

Ah, foresight. You can be such fun sometimes.

ETA: And now I've moved on to the Terminus novelization, and I'm highly amused that Tegan thinks of Turlough as "the Brat." Speaks a lot about their early relationship.

Well, bye-bye, paid account. 'Twas fun.

Anyway, have the reviews of some books I've been reading:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - J.K. Rowling )

The Fry Chronicles: an Autobiography - Stephen Fry )

13 Ways of Looking at the Novel - Jane Smiley )

  • Doctor Who: Logopolis - Christopher H. Bidmead

  • Doctor Who: Castrovalva - Christopher H. Bidmead

  • Doctor Who: Cold Fusion - Lance Parkin

  • Doctor Who: Four to Doomsday - Terrance Dicks

  • Fiasco: A History of Hollywood's Iconic Flops - James Robert Parish

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - J.K. Rowling

ETA: I think I might start doing book reviews. It feels a bit dry, just making lists, isn't it?
