They ran through the corridors, chambers and passageways of the Time Lord Citadel. When they finally reached the TARDIS, an enormous feeling of relief swept over the Doctor. He would be able to get away from Gallifrey and once again be free to roam the stars...

This feeling did not last long, however, as two of the Time Lords in charge of his trial appeared, blocking his path.

"There is no escape, Doctor," one of them said, his voice devoid of any emotion.

At this, the Doctor and Zoe stopped immediately. Jamie, however, still tried to make a break for it, sprinting back the way they came, but another force field quickly blocked his path. Thwarted, he returned to where his companions now stood.

"It is time to say goodbye to your friends," the Time Lord continued implacably.

"There must be something we can do?" Zoe asked, as the Doctor turned to his companions.

"No, Zoe, not this time," he replied sadly. With a defeated sigh, he turned to Jamie and held out his hands. "Well, goodbye, Jamie."

"But, Doctor surely we could..."

Jamie's disbelieving plea tore at him, but the Doctor merely shook his head in sorrow. "Goodbye, Jamie," he repeated. The young Highlander's loyalty and faith in him had always been a great source of comfort and courage, but now it only filled this moment with even more sadness. Being forced to say goodbye to him was proving to be as difficult as when he left Susan behind with that young man of hers.

The feeling was clearly mutual, as Jamie's eyes were beginning to fill with tears, and he clasped the Doctor’s hands as if unwilling to let them go. "I-I won't forget you, you know."

"I won't forget you," the Doctor promised. “Now, don't go blundering into too much trouble, will you?" he added with feigned optimism, thumping his arm.

"Oh, you're a fine one to talk," the boy replied, grumpily.

The Doctor then turned to the girl. "Goodbye, Zoe."

"Goodbye, Doctor," she said, tear-stricken. "Will we ever meet again?"

"Again?" He smiled wanly at her. "Now, Zoe, you and I know time is relative, isn't it?"

Holding hands, Jamie and Zoe headed towards one of the many TARDISes stationed in that corridor. They waved goodbye, their faces filled with sadness and resignation, before finally entering. The moment the door closed after them, the Doctor felt like both his hearts had been torn out.

Well, that's it, then. They're gone.

"They'll forget me, won't they?" he asked of the Time Lord, unwilling to believe they would show some compassion, and leave his friends with their memories of him as consolation.

"Not entirely," he replied in that same cold, uninterested tone. "They will be returned to a time just before they went away with you. They will remember their first adventure with you, but nothing more. But come along," he added, "your fate has been decided."

With a last sad glance at the TARDIS that had just taken his friends away from him, the Doctor followed him into the trial chamber.
