Prologue
The young man entered his office, his face displaying the shock and confusion that were rolling through his mind. He felt sick to his stomach with what he had just seen, but after taking a deep breath, he forced himself to overcome the nausea and head straight to his cot.
He kneeled and searched under the bed, where he found his beloved teddy bear. He looked at its face and, with a whispered "I'm sorry," took it to his desk. Sighing, he picked an old letter opener and tore open the small, newer stitches he had made a year before in the bear's side. He then removed from inside a silvery metallic object that looked like an oversized thimble with a plug-like appendix.
"I'll sew you back up soon," he once again whispered to the bear, "I promise."
He quickly moved to the telephone system and stuck the object's appendix to one of the box's plugs; the thimble-like part of the object began to glow.
Sitting down, the young man started to push the lever of the telephone system as if making any ordinary call. To his relief, he soon heard the familiar sound of a dial tone.
"C'mon," he said to himself, as he waited for someone to reply from the other end. "C'mon, Doctor, pick up the phone..."
