Fandom: Doctor Who/M*A*S*H

Word Count: 1922
Disclaimer: Doctor Who and all its characters belong to the BBC; M*A*S*H and all its characters belong to Twentieth Century Fox. I own nothing - not even the Fourteenth Doctor.
Summary: The Doctor returns to a place he has visited in the past to stop some old enemies from recovering something that is best left forgotten.
Warning: Spoilers for Abyssinia, Henry/Welcome to Korea.
Author's Notes: Contrary to what might appear, the three women working for Rosie are actually (very) minor canon characters from M*A*S*H, rather than OCs. Hye, Kim and Mama-San have all made their appearance in Abyssinia, Henry, the episode marking the departure of Henry Blake from the show, with Kim making a comeback on the following episode (albeit portrayed by a different actress, which some people might view as making her a completely different character with the same name).

Chapter 6

"Doctor..." Jamie shook the inanimate body of his friend, now lying on the floor. "Doctor, please wake up..." The Doctor, however, did not react to his increasingly desperate pleas.

"I'm sorry," Captain Pierce said, gently touching the young man's shoulder. "She's gone."

"No!" Jamie shouted fiercely. He shook off the Captain's hand and looked up at the two impassive figures standing in front of him. "You killed her!" he cried in disbelief.

"We gave her a warning," the Rutan pretending to be Major Houlihan said.

"Nothing more," the other added.

Blind rage took over Jamie. He hadn't felt such anger since he had been returned to his own time with his memories erased. This time, however, his rage was focused, and he knew where this anger came from: somebody had taken the Doctor away from him again.

"You killed her," he repeated, his voice growing harsh as his throat closed against the tears he would not shed before an enemy. He reached for his dirk, which was concealed down his boot-top. "You'll answer for this. Craig an tuirc!" he cried as he rose sharply, ready to jump at the two Rutans. However, before he could reach them, both Captain Pierce and the Monk grabbed his arms.

"Are you out of your mind, young man?" the Monk asked in an anxious tone. "I'm sorry," he then added to the Rutans apologetically. "He's young and foolish."

"Let go of me!" Jamie bellowed, as he struggled to free himself without accidentally stabbing anyone in the process.

"Listen," Captain Pierce said, his voice showing the effort of trying to restrain the much stronger young Highlander, "I don't really get what's going on in here, but I know that you can't hit them before getting zapped yourself."

"But they killed the Doctor!" Jamie roared, anguish written on his face.

"I know," the Captain said sadly.

"Jamie..." a faint voice croaked from the floor. Shocked, Jamie stopped struggling, and as the two men relaxed their grip on him, he managed to twist around and look back. The Doctor, still lying on the floor, had her eyes open and was staring at him, albeit with an unfocused gaze.

"She's alive," one of the girls said in amazement (was it Radar's friend Hye? Jamie wasn't sure), as she kneeled next to the fallen Time Lord.

"But that's impossible!" Captain Pierce exclaimed, also astonished by the Doctor's recovery.

"Jamie, put that thing away," the Doctor said weakly, as she pointed at his knife. "You'll poke someone's eye out." He hastened to obey.

"Doctor!" Jamie exclaimed with joy, as he kneeled next to the girl, taking firm hold of the hand the Doctor had pointed at him. "I thought..."

"The discharge was strong enough to knock out a Time Lord," she said, "but not to kill. They really are following orders not to take any life. How very interesting." In spite of her apparent discomfort, she gave Jamie a smile that gave him the impression that she had just had an idea.

"Of course, things would have been different if they had been attacked by a lunatic with a knife," the Monk said sternly. Jamie ignored him, his attention focused solely on the fact that the Doctor was alive.

"We thank you for contacting us," the Rutan posing as Major Burns said, and Jamie finally turned his attention away from the Doctor to take notice of this exchange. He looked up to find one of the creatures was talking to the Monk, who had approached them with a smile on his lips.

"Do they have the weapons?" the other Rutan asked, gesturing toward the Doctor and himself.

"I'm afraid not," the Monk said, "but I'm positive they will produce them soon, now." Jamie's mouth opened with surprise. What was the Monk up to now?

"Good," the Rutan posing as Major Burns said. "We will contact you again soon, to claim them," he said to the Doctor, before turning his attention back to the Monk. "You shall come with us, so that we may discuss your reward."

"Thank you," the Monk said, with a genuine grin. "Thank you very much. It will be my pleasure."

"Why, you little..." Jamie was about to rise again, but was stopped by the Doctor's hand on his arm.

"Let them go."

"But, Doctor, did you not hear what they said?" Jamie asked, as the Monk and the two Rutans departed from the bar. "He called the Sontarans and the Rutans. The rogue's working both sides!"

"He also told them we don't have the cylinders," she said. It was only then that Jamie remembered that he still carried the cylinders in his breast pocket. "But I'm not surprised," the Doctor continued. "He wouldn't be the Monk if he didn't try to get in everybody's good graces in order to always have someone willing to save his skin when things turn sour." Her smile widened.

"But, Doctor..."

"I need you to go back to the TARDIS," the Doctor interrupted, "and fetch me my jacket."

"Your jacket?" Jamie looked at her with a confused look on his face. "D'you recall the size of your wardrobe? I wouldnae know where to start!"

"My old jacket. You know, the big tweed thing with the scorch mark on the back? It's still in the control room on the coat-hanger. I left something in one of my pockets that might help reduce the Monk's number of escape routes."

"Oh, aye? What is it?"

"Well, it's a..."

"What about the Majors?" Captain Pierce interrupted, as he too kneeled beside her.

"And those things?" the girl still left standing added, watching the entrance with some trepidation, as if expecting the Rutans to return any moment.

"I'll deal with the Rutans as soon as I can stand," the Doctor said. "Their attitude has shown me that it won't be difficult to deal with them peacefully."

"And the Sontarans?" Jamie asked worriedly.

"That will be a different business." She frowned. "Let's hope we won't have to deal with them."

"What are Sontarans?" asked the girl still kneeling beside Jamie.

"Never mind that now, lass," Jamie said, before turning back to the Doctor. "What should I fetch from your jacket?"

"It's a..." The Doctor cut herself off abruptly. She tried to rise, but let herself drop to the floor again.

"Doctor? What's wrong?" Jamie pleaded, as he cradled her head and shoulders.

"Oh my," she said. "I'm getting rather dizzy."

"Doctor, are you all right?" Jamie asked, but she didn't reply. Instead, she turned to the girl who has asked about Sontarans.

"Ace," she said to her, "Mel," she added to the other girl, "you go with Jamie."

"Mel?" the girl said, confused. "My name is Kim."

"Ace," she carried on, clearly not having heard Kim at all, "don't take your Nitro-9 with you. It's too dangerous." She then turned to Jamie. "And you, don't let them go chasing after dragons, either."

"Eh?" he asked, confused. "What are you talking about?"

Instead of replying, the Doctor looked up at him and with a sigh, closed her eyes.

"Doctor?" Jamie shook her gently, concerned once more. "Doctor?"

"Is she dead?" Kim asked.

The other girl (Jamie assumed this was Hye) checked her pulse. "No, just unconscious." She paused and looked at Captain Pierce, who had his fingers pressed to the Doctor's wrist. "Her pulse is weird."

The Captain nodded and looked at Jamie. "We need to take her to Post-Op. I'll be able to take care of her there."

The Highlander looked at him suspiciously. He still hadn't forgotten the Captain's disgraceful behaviour towards the Doctor earlier, and did not feel at all inclined to trust him with her. Captain Pierce must have sensed his feelings; he looked at him in a serious manner and said in a soft yet firm voice, "I might be a louse, but I'm also a doctor. And I don't joke around when there's a life at stake."

Jamie looked into the man's eyes, and saw something in them, a sort of weary sadness, combined with kindness and determination, that immediately disarmed any harsh reply he might have given.

"She... she's not exactly normal, you know," he finally said as he rose, lifting the Doctor gently. "Just in case you find something you might not recognize."

"I figured as much," the Captain said. "Hopefully, she'll only require some rest and I won't need to examine her to that degree."

"Aye. Well, I'll walk with you to the hospital. Her jacket is there, and we dinnae know if there's any more of those beasties out there." Or Sontarans, he thought grimly, but decided not to express it out loud for fear that the others would panic after he explained about them.

"We'd better be going, then," Captain Pierce said, standing up, while Jamie cradled the Doctor, prepared to carry her to Post-Op himself. He'd only trust the Captain so far, where the Doctor was concerned.

"Hawkeye..." Kim, looking even more anxious, was pulling on the Captain's sleeve. "Hawkeye, what about the patients?"

"They went with the nurses, didn't they?" Hye asked, hopeful, as she stood up.

"Well..." Jamie couldn't help but notice that the worry on Captain Pierce's eyes had increased. "Only those that could be moved," he finally said after some hesitation.

"But that means Haneul has gone, hasn't he?" Kim asked, sounding as hopeful as her friend; however, her anxiety soon returned when she saw the look on the Captain's face. "Hasn't he?"

"I'm sorry," he said with a sigh. "I thought BJ had told you."

"But he was well just this morning!" the girl said, her voice now near hysterics. "I went to see him. I talked to him."

"He is well," Captain Pierce assured her, "and he will recover quickly - but he's still too weak to be moved.

Kim took a sharp intake of breath. "I'm going with you," she said in a resolute voice.

"What?" Jamie's eyes widened in surprise. "But you cannae come, you should be evacuating with the rest of the camp."

"Yeah," Rosie said, her arms around the old woman in a protective manner. "We must go now."

Kim turned to her boss. "But Haneul is still here!" she cried.

Rosie sighed. "All right. But you're too upset." She turned to Hye. "You will go with Kim. I'll only be happy if I know you'll be looking after her."

"Oh no," Jamie groaned.

"I'm not going to leave my brother alone with those things walking around!" Kim said with a trembling voice, glaring at the Highlander.

"He's only five," Hye added, in a calmer voice than her friend, but displaying the same resolution.

"Look, if he's with the doctors, then he'll be alright," Jamie insisted. "The Rutans said they'll not harm us."

"Then we'll be safe too," Kim said serenely.

Jamie ground his teeth: this was just like talking with Zoe! "No, it's too dangerous. You cannae come and that's final."

Hye walked behind the counter, and produced her bat. "You try and stop us, Joe."

Jamie raised his eyebrows. "Eh?" he asked, looking at Captain Pierce, who was shaking his head. He looked back at Hye (immediately recognisable with the addition of the bat), and stated stonily, "The name's Jamie."

"I'm afraid when those two set their minds on something, there's no way of talking them out of it," the Captain said, amused in spite of the grave situation.

"Yeah." Kim nodded at the Captain and crossed her arms. "We're going."

Women, Jamie grumbled to himself.
